No Side translations: chapters 31-40

I translated chapters 31 to 40 of No Side several months ago. I've dropped the series now, but there's no need to let them go to waste, so I've uploaded them here. Do whatever you want with them, you don't need to ask or credit me.

The only caveat: these are very rough translations. There may be typos and missing lines as well. I know jack-all about rugby, so the terms might be wrong as well. It's not a problem for me because I do a lot of rewriting and correcting while I'm typesetting, but if you plan to use them for scanslating you might want to get a translator to look them over first.

Unfortunately I can't share the corresponding HQ scans because they're not mine to upload (and I deleted them all anyway). My apologies to Athanor for not being able to complete this project.

Wish I had some fancy excuse, but I just don't feel like scanslating any more. I'll keep the blog up for another month or two before closing it down. Chapter 105 of Umishi will be the last one.

Sorry, Umishi fans. Sorry, No Side fans. I wanted to finish at least Umishi before quitting, but I don't even have that much motivation left.

Maybe now that I've gotten off the pot, someone can pick those series up and finish them faster than I could have.

Originally I wanted to release a chapter of No Side so I could play with the new HQ raws, but the provider hasn't gotten back to me on what he wants to be credited as, so I can't use them yet. So we'll go with our regularly scheduled Umishi.

Also this chapter contains gratuitous naked shots of Hiro so it's not safe for work. I think the author woke up and realized: "Holy smokes! It's been 10 volumes and I still haven't drawn Hiro naked! WTF is wrong with me?!" and the rest was history.

I just finished translating Umishi vol 8 yesterday, and I'll be done with No Side volume 4 today so I'm feeling pretty good about myself. So good, in fact, that I'll take the rest of the week off. See ya!

Thanks for all the suggestions I've received over the past months and weeks. However I've decided that I won't be picking up any new series once I'm done with Umishi and No Side so I can focus on grad school. Of course finishing those two series is still a long way away judging by my current pace (especially for Umishi), but I thought I'd give everyone a heads up.

Wheee! The World Cup is so much fun! I'm not much of a football fan, but once every four years I go all out and just enjoy the mood! It's like the Olympics, but better. Not to mention I spent most of 2006 working and studying and working some more, so it's been eight years since I got to cut loose like this. Yay!

The raws are very bad, so if anyone has/knows where I can find better ones, please share. Right now I could use some help cleaning these. It would make the series come out way faster if I could just focus on translating and typesetting and let someone else prepare the raws. As you can see, my standards aren't very high. I just have a few stipulations:
1. Don't resize anything
2. Separating the pages is optional (I left them alone)
3. Removing gutter shadow is optional (I left it alone)
4. Don't overlevel. Less is more when it comes to bad raws
5. Removing all the dirt is optional, but get rid of what you can without spoiling the art. See #4.
6. Do NOT use any filters. None. No, not even NeatImage. And certainly not those awful Topaz ones that turn everything into blurry grey blobs.

If you look at the raws and think you can do all that...hmm, let's see... send me an e-mail at [removed] and we'll talk. Ideally I'm looking for people who can take on whole volumes at a time, but if you can do even one chapter that'd be a big help.

Umishi chapter 62, and No Side

It's been a while, huh? Hang in there, guys, the end of March is just around the corner, and then we'll have regular releases again (knock wood). IMO an arc hasn't really started until someone gets into the water, so as of this chapter, the LPG rescue arc has officially begun! Go, Sawa, go! And that other guy too.

Now, about No Side. I mentioned years ago that I might be interested in doing No Side at some point. Now that jfgslo has found raws, I can get started ...is what I want to say, but given how busy I am and how bad the raws are, I can't do both translation and editing by myself. The plan for now is to get two or three chapters translated by the end of January and then hunt for an editor skilled at handling double-page spreads to do all the dirty work. [At this point someone's going to suggest I do the same for Umishi. And I'm going to shoot that person. DON'T TAKE AWAY MY ONLY PLEASURE!]

Ideally I'd like the raws to be at least 1200 high, but a deal is a deal so we'll see what we can do.

Your suggestions

When I started this whole thing, I asked for suggestions of manga to scanslate and I've gotten a pretty positive response so far. As promised I've checked out most of the titles I got and I'm here to present my report. I will point out, though, that just because a manga is fun to read doesn't mean it's fun to scanslate. Keep that in mind.

Me and the Devil Blues: Wow, this is surprisingly good. It's been a while since I read something this good. But I don't want to do it. Yup, just like that.

No Side: As I said, I plan to do this as soon as I can get some raws. I own the books in Japanese so it doesn't matter whether they're French raws, Spanish raws, Chinese raws, whatever.

Wadatsumi (or something?): Speaking of Chinese raws, I can't read Chinese. If you want me to check something out it has to be in English or Japanese. Heck, if I could read Chinese I wouldn't be here right now. I'd be out there buying up every issue of Oriental Heroes and taking a month off work to read them all, ni hao!

Say Hello to Black Jack - There's no denying it's an excellent manga, but... I hate hospitals and medical dramas so I don't see myself working on this. You should've seen the look on my face when I was reading the operating scenes. When it got to the second chapter with the old man, urrgggghhhh...delete.

Jigoku Sensei Nube - Not bad, but not interesting enough to justify 31 volumes of work. I don't have that kind of stamina yet. And the whole occult thing is a bit....

Rainbow - The content is too raw and messy and depressing for me. I couldn't even make it through the first chapter. Just violence and sadism doesn't necessarily make for a good manga.

Jaja Uma Grooming Up! - After 3 volumes I still can't quite make up my mind. Hmm... I might need to read a little more, but I don't really want to. That's a bad sign, isn't it?

Shindou - Ho-hummm... Give me Nodame Cantabile any day.

Wind Mill - It's from the same mangaka as Yakitate Japan so I was expecting something good but I was rather disappointed. Come to think of it, I've read a lot of manga about baseball but not a single one to date has been able to make me care about or understand the game.
